Caring for Your Jewelry: An Artisan’s Advice
Gabriela Fernandez Parada
Discover timeless tips from an artisan who believes jewelry is more than adornment, it’s a lifelong companion.
When I create a piece of jewelry, I imagine it being loved for many years—perhaps even generations. But for jewelry to keep its beauty and meaning, it needs care. Over time I’ve learned that the way we treat our jewels makes all the difference in how they sparkle, how they last, and how they continue to tell our stories. Here is my advice, not just as an artisan, but as someone who deeply cherishes the relationship between people and their jewelry.
Wear It With Awareness
Jewelry is strong, but it is not invincible. Rings, for example, are often exposed to soaps, lotions, and everyday knocks. I always suggest removing jewelry when doing heavy work, cleaning, or exercising. It’s a simple habit that prevents scratches, loose stones, and unnecessary wear.
Think of your jewelry as a delicate companion—it loves to be seen, but not to be mistreated.
Clean Gently, Shine Brightly
The sparkle of diamonds and the glow of metals can fade under layers of oils, dust, and residue. Cleaning your jewelry at home is simple:
Use warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush (like a baby toothbrush).
Rinse gently and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
For pieces with intricate designs or pavé settings, be extra gentle—sometimes a soak and a soft cloth are better than scrubbing. Regular cleaning keeps your jewelry vibrant, but harsh chemicals should always be avoided.
Store With Care
Jewelry loves space. Storing pieces together can cause them to scratch each other. I recommend keeping each item in its own soft pouch or box, ideally lined with fabric. If you travel with jewelry, wrap each piece separately to prevent tangling or friction.
A simple habit, but it preserves surfaces, keeps stones secure, and avoids heartbreak later.
Check and Protect
Over time, clasps can weaken, and prongs holding diamonds may loosen. I always suggest checking your jewelry regularly, especially if it’s a piece you wear every day. If you notice movement in a stone or difficulty fastening a clasp, it’s best to have it inspected by a professional jeweler before it becomes a bigger problem.
Think of it like a health check-up—small attention now prevents bigger issues later.
The Special Touch of Lab-Grown Diamonds
Since I work with lab-grown diamonds, I often get asked: Do they require special care? The answer is no. Just like mined diamonds, they are durable and timeless. Caring for them is the same—keep them clean, protect them from knocks, and they will shine brilliantly for generations. What makes them even more special, for me, is knowing that their sparkle comes from a mindful and sustainable choice.
Closing Reflections
Caring for jewelry is not complicated—it is about respect and mindfulness. When you give attention to your jewels, you extend their life and preserve the memories they carry.
As an artisan, nothing makes me happier than knowing the pieces I create will stay radiant and meaningful for years to come. After all, jewelry is not only made to adorn—it is made to endure.
